Timing belts

The product portfolio offered by the WIAG Antriebstechnik GmbH has the perfect drive belt for every kind of application. An extensive warehouse facility in Lippstadt, boasting a huge variety of makes such as Conti, Bando, Megadyne, Gates, Mitsuboshi, Steigentech and offering virtually all dimensions, ensures rapid and flexible delivery capabilities (Timing belt table).

Belt drives work very effectively as a result of their high efficiency and are low maintenance. It is the classic timing belts, with their positive locking engagement and synchronous transmission, that make up our chief product, which is divided up into two different groups of material, i.e. polyurethane and neoprene.

The wide selection of timing belt varieties found in drive technology has increased enormously in the last few years. There is now the ideal timing belt available for every application but that does not mean it is available from every manufacturer.

WIAG Antriebstechnik GmbH enjoys the great advantage of being able to access all timing belt systems, i.e. pulleys and belts, all makes and all models that are found on the market. Having one of the largest and most comprehensive warehouses in Europe means that we have swift access to products and a high degree of availability, with flexibility also being guaranteed.

Depending on the application in question, the timing belt is used either as a drive belt or, in the area of conveyor technology, as a conveyor belt specially tailored to suit each conveying task and situation.

Basically a distinction is made between open end and endless timing belts, depending on whether a circumferential drive or linear motion with regular rotation reversal is required.

Timing belts are toothed either on one side or on both. When opposing rotation directions are required, doubly toothed timing belts are used, with each side of the belt - inner and outer - running in the pulleys moving in the opposite direction.

The neoprene timing belts can be divided into two groups: the original and classic timing belts with their inch dimensions and trapezoidal tooth profile and then the more modern and evolved timing belts available in metric pitch with the HTD and STS/STD tooth profiles. The neoprene timing belts are available in pitches ranging from 1 mm up to 31.75 mm and with the appropriate variety of tooth profiles.

Neoprene timing belts in turn can be further differentiated as regards their various materials and tensile cords, factors which enable different levels of transmission performance to be achieved.

But basically, all the various models have the same kind of belt structure:
Polychloroprene belt back, glass-fibre, aramid or carbon tensile cord and polychloroprene teeth, all coated by means of a polyamide fabric.

Polyurethane:

Polyurethane timing belts can be manufactured in three different ways:

1) Cast moulded endless timing belts (as a roll)

These polyurethane timing belts are mainly produced in T and AT profiles with a metric pitch extending from 2 up to 20 mm. Here, too, there can be found a wide range of special profiles and pitches manufactured exactly to customer requirements. For each number of teeth and for every different profile a separate mould is needed. Usually the timing belts are produced using tensile cords made out of steel and Kevlar.

WIAG Antriebstechnik has a complete programme of timing belt rolls in stock in its warehouses, thus allowing every kind of width to be cut immediately and directly as required.
During the production process the tensile cord is wound onto a mould core, which is set into the outer coating of the timing belt. Polyurethane is then introduced into the mould under heat and pressure. The mould is removed after the cooling process has taken place and then the required belt widths can be cut from the finished roll.

2) Extruded open end timing belts (by the metre)

Open end polyurethane timing belts are currently being produced in virtually all kinds of profiles. These timing belts, too, are manufactured using tensile cords made out of steel and Kevlar. In order to enhance running characteristics, the back of such belts and also their toothed system can be coated with polyamide fabric. Particularly in the case of transport applications, this fabric serves not only to improve gliding and sliding properties but it also minimises noise levels.

WIAG Antriebstechnik also has an extensive range of this product in stock, which means all makes can be supplied in a flexible and indeed swift manner.

Such timing belts are manufactured in a continual process where, on appropriately prestressed tension members, the polyurethane is extruded with a shaping wheel onto the tensile cord and it then solidifies during the circulation process.

Depending on the lengths being produced, the timing belts are wound on reels or simply rolled up helically. The produced width, depending on the pitch, reaches up to 450 mm.

The open end timing belts are used for the manufacturing of welded, endless polyurethane timing belts. The amount of teeth produced always has to be in line with a certain given minimum length. Both ends of the belt are punched in a tapering finger shape, joined and welded in a suitable fixture. The transmission performance of such connections is generally stated as ca. 50-60 % of the actual performance capability because the tensile cord is interrupted as a result of the joint.

3) Extruded endless timing belts (Flex timing belts)

Just like cast polyurethane timing belts (on the roll), flex belts also have a continuous tensile cord. From a defined minimum length onwards, flex timing belts can be produced with any number of teeth in each particular pitch. A tensile cord is wound on two shaping wheels with the appropriate distance being kept and the polyurethane is extruded onto this in a circulating fashion. The maximum width that can be produced is usually 100 to 150 mm depending on the pitch.

Flex timing belts are turned out by our manufacturers to order, i.e. in all requested models.

Special belts

WIAG Antriebstechnik GmbH makes it possible for you to obtain special belts in all imaginable variations, belts with a huge diversity of coatings and equipped with cams of all kinds. Our timing belts can be individually produced and tailor-made to suit your special application.Have a word with our application technicians who will give you helpful and competent advice.

Special timing belts

By means of further finishing or "refining", basic belts, timing belts or V-belts and also, for instance, Poly V belts (multi-rib belts) can be transformed into special belts, enabling functions to be carried out in a huge diversity of applications. Such enhancement can, for example, take the form of coating on the belt back, mechanical processing or the positioning of cams.

Round belts and moulded belts

These kinds of belt equipment are being increasingly used for drive technology in the world of transport. And especially when sensitive products, such as foodstuffs, electromechanical components and indeed paper, have to be carried or moved, these belt products with their variety of material compositions are implemented. It is quite possible to vary the features of these belts - their surface finish, the strength of the material and its hardness and also the choice of tension members such as polyester, aramid or glass fibre. Resistance against various media constitutes a further advantage.

  • All pitches, makes and models
  • Various tension members available (steel, aramid, glass fibre, carbon)
  • Packed in lengths and widths ready for assembly, special timing belts also available

Transport/conveyor/processing belts

Similar to a neoprene timing belt, a conveyor belt or transport belt is made up out of and joined together by several layers and a selection of diverse materials.

The drive is usually brought about by frictional engagement.

In order to strengthen the belt, an additional insert can be used between the carrying and running sides. Various models are available each having differing properties. Such a layer can also assist with power transmission.
By choosing the appropriate material and having the right surface structure or embossing, the texture of the running and carrying sides can be optimally adapted to suit the requirements demanded by the application.

High-performance timing belts

The new generations of high-performance timing belts can be found everywhere in use where otherwise only chains could do the job. A combination of special polyurethane blends or rubber compounds together with a carbon tensile cord and performance optimisation of the tooth design has put these high-octane timing belts in the alpha class of the belt world.

And WIAG Antriebstechnik is able to supply you with such belts straight from the workshops of all the well-known belt manufacturers.
Both the construction and also the quality of these timing belts are all very similar, irrespective of all the different manufacturers producing them.

CONTI® SYNCHROCHAIN CARBON and GATES PolyChain®Carbon are based on a polyurethane blend with a carbon tensile cord. The carbon tensile cord of this kind of timing belt guarantees a high degree of strength and also stability of length while at the same time improving impact and fatigue resistance and minimising stretching.

The GigaTorque GX from Mitsuboshi has been developed for all applications where high efficiency or maximum power transmission is demanded. This timing belt boasts carbon tensile cords and a special coating of the teeth so as to achieve high efficiency levels. HNBR rubber is used for the toothed system in order to ensure good stability of the belt's length during rapid acceleration and deceleration.

The PLATINUM belts from Megadyne are timing belts based on various HNBR elastomers, which, thanks to the development of the innovative dual core hybrid cord technology, succeed in eliminating the problems which can arise in connection with steel and aramid cords. These PLATINUM belts are able to reach the highest level of performance as a result of the embedding of this tensile cord in a newly developed rubber compound which operates in conjunction with a special and incredibly tough and resilient fabric on the toothed side.
